Keep on Moving: Staying Active in Retirement

There’s something magical about movement. It keeps the body strong, the mind sharp, and the spirit uplifted. At Camden Grove Estate, we believe that staying active isn’t about marathons or muscles — unless that’s your passion (in which case, we’ll be your biggest fans!).

It’s about finding joy in everyday motion and embracing the freedom to move, explore, and connect in a community that truly champions well-being and health as an important part of life for all of us. Here are some thoughts on building an active lifestyle and why it matters.

Why Staying Active Matters

The research is compelling: physical activity in later years is one of the best gifts we can give ourselves. Movement helps improve balance, build strength, support heart health, and ease the symptoms of chronic conditions like arthritis and diabetes. But it’s not just the physical perks—regular activity lifts the mood, reduces stress, and supports mental clarity. And when you’re moving alongside your neighbors, the motivation becomes mutual.

Everyday Movement, Extraordinary Impact

Staying active doesn’t need to be formal or strenuous. A leisurely garden stroll, planting herbs on the patio, a few morning stretches—these gentle routines bring rhythm and purpose to each day. At Camden Grove, many of our residents embrace movement in all forms. They use the gym, participate in movement classes with our on site physiotherapist, and many belong to spirited walking groups that explore the local area.

Our community spaces are designed to make wellness feel natural—woven into the day and seek to promote healthy activity and socialisation that is key to mental and physical health.

Local Energy, Local Inspiration

More and more there are inspiring examples of senior health and fitness programs that are emerging to ensure people have the right setting to promote activity that is designed for people as they age and have different needs to younger people. For example, in Lilyfield, the Uniting Seniors Gym shows how strength and camaraderie go hand in hand. In Bondi Junction, clinic-based fitness programs offer tailored support for chronic conditions, helping older adults regain mobility and confidence. Even well-known names like F45 Glebe are joining in—modifying workouts for older members while keeping the team spirit alive. It is highly likely that these models will expand in the future.

Global Lessons, Local Life

We can also draw inspiration from around the world. In the U.S., group-based initiatives like Active Living Every Day promote habit-forming movement with peer support, while the Arthritis Foundation’s Aquatic Program harnesses the healing power of water for gentle joint relief. For those who prefer to set their own pace, personalized programs like Active Choices provide support without the need to leave home. It is clear that globally, organisations are seeing the immense benefits of healthy ageing and how age-appropriate exercise in the right environment can have real benefits.
