Thriving Throughout The Holiday Season

Ways to help you stay healthy and happy over the Christmas break.

Christmas is a wonderful time of year - filled with good food and good company. Yet sometimes it can also be a little stressful and exhausting for many people. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy and feeling energised this festive season.

Tip One: Find small ways to be active

The holiday period can alter our usual routines… but staying active is key for both our physical and mental health. Try to fit in some gentle exercises like walking, stretching or even dancing to holiday music. If family visits are part of your plan, perhaps you could suggest a group walk or friendly game of lawn bowls, golf or tennis to get everyone together.

Tip Two: All in moderation

Festive season food is definitely something we all look forward to. There’s no reason to miss out but try to avoid overindulgence that will leave you feeling sluggish. Pace yourself, taking smaller portions and savouring each bite. Staying hydrated will help too, especially with the warmer weather.

Tip Three: Carve our time for relaxation

It can be a very busy time of year with family gatherings, outings and social Christmas events. Don’t hesitate to take time out to recharge. In fact, it’s a good idea to schedule it in so you make sure some downtime happens. Go at your own pace so that you can enjoy all the great things that are happening. If you are starting to feel stressed out, practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or mindfulness to help you regain a sense of calm.

Tip Four: Connect with loved ones and friends

Christmas is a great time of year to reach out and make contact with those  you love. It’s a good excuse to reconnect and helps you end the year on a good note. Some people don’t have family nearby…is there someone you know who is quite isolated at this time of year? A Christmas card or phone call to them might go a long way.

Tip Five: Find ways to give back

It’s the season of giving…whether you’re able to volunteer with a local charity or give Christmas gifts to those in need, every little bit counts. You’ll feel a warm sense of well-being at having helped others have a brighter Christmas.

Tip Six: Get plenty of rest

The excitement and activity this time of year can sometimes mean less sleep, which impacts your mood and health. Prioritise a good night’s rest by sticking to your sleep routine. If you have trouble sleeping, consider a gentle evening routine with a bath or calming activities such as listening to music or doing a puzzle.

It only takes a few good choices to help you enjoy the holidays to the fullest. A balanced approach makes it easier to enjoy all the good things on offer. We hope you have a wonderful Christmas and are ready to greet the New Year feeling tip-top.
